How to merge PDF files
- Add two or more PDFs. Drop them on the box or click Choose files. You can add more at any time.
- Put them in order with the ↑ and ↓ buttons. The pages of each file are added in this order, top to bottom. Remove a file with ×.
- Click Merge PDFs. The files are combined into a new document in a second or two.
- Click Download merged PDF to save it.
All pages are kept exactly as they were: text stays selectable and searchable, and images keep their resolution, because the pages are copied rather than re-printed.
Why merging in your browser matters
PDFs are often the most sensitive files people have: contracts, bank statements, tax forms, medical records, ID scans. Most merge sites upload them to a server to do the job. FileWise merges them inside your browser with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library, so the documents never leave your computer or phone. It works even if you go offline after the page loads.
Common reasons to combine PDFs
- Job and visa applications that accept only one file for the CV, cover letter and certificates.
- Expense reports: put all the receipts and invoices for a trip or a month in one file.
- Scanned documents where each page was saved as a separate PDF.
- Reports and coursework assembled from a cover page, chapters and appendices.
Limits and tips
- Password-protected PDFs can't be merged until the password is removed. If you know the password, open the file and save or print a copy without protection.
- Very large files need memory on your device. Desktop browsers handle hundreds of megabytes; on a phone, merge smaller batches.
- Fillable forms: form fields with the same name in different files can interfere with each other. Fill in and flatten (print to PDF) forms before merging.
- File size: the merged PDF is about the sum of the inputs. If it's too big to email, scanned pages are usually the cause; scan at 150–200 DPI instead of 300–600 for documents meant to be read on screen.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to merge confidential PDFs here?
Yes. The PDFs are read and combined by your own browser. They're never uploaded to FileWise or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Is there a limit on the number of files or pages?
There's no fixed limit and no daily cap. The practical limit is your device's memory: desktop browsers can merge hundreds of pages; phones are better with smaller batches.
Will the merged PDF have a watermark?
No. The merged document contains only your pages.
Can I change the order of the pages?
You can change the order of the files with the ↑ and ↓ buttons. Pages within each file keep their original order.
Why can't a PDF be added?
It's either damaged or protected with a password. Remove the password (open it with the password and save an unprotected copy), then add it again.
PDFs are merged in your browser and are not uploaded. Keep copies of your original documents.
