How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Add your HEIC photos. Drop them on the box above or click Choose files. On an iPhone, choose the photos from the Files app or your photo library.
- Pick the output. JPG works everywhere and is the usual choice. Choose PNG for a lossless copy, or WebP for smaller files on websites.
- Download each photo, or click Download all (ZIP) to save the batch in one go.
The first time you convert a HEIC file in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, the page loads a decoder of about 3 MB. After that, conversion is fast and works offline. Safari can read HEIC on its own, so it doesn't need the decoder.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It's based on the HEIF standard and the HEVC (H.265) video codec, and stores a photo at roughly half the size of a JPG of the same quality. That saves space on your phone, but many apps and websites still can't open HEIC. Windows needs an extra extension, many Android apps and older programs don't support it, and countless upload forms only accept JPG or PNG.
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size (12 MP photo) | about 1.5–2.5 MB | about 3–5 MB |
| Opens on Windows without extras | No | Yes |
| Accepted by most websites and forms | No | Yes |
| Transparency, 16-bit color, depth maps | Supported | No |
| Live Photos and bursts in one file | Supported | No |
Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?
At quality 90, the default here, the difference is invisible for normal viewing. The JPG will be larger than the HEIC, because JPG compression is less efficient, not because quality was added. If you need an exact, lossless copy for editing, choose PNG, though PNG files are much larger.
The converted image keeps the photo's orientation, so portraits stay upright. Hidden metadata such as GPS location is not copied into the new file, which is useful before sharing photos publicly.
How to stop your iPhone saving HEIC
If you'd rather your iPhone saved JPGs in the first place, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be JPG, at the cost of more storage. Alternatively, keep HEIC and set Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic, and the iPhone converts photos to JPG when you copy them over a cable.
Why convert here instead of with an app?
Most online HEIC converters upload your photos to their servers. Personal photos often contain faces, documents, your home and your location. FileWise converts them inside your browser using libheif, an open-source HEIC decoder compiled to WebAssembly, so the photos never leave your device.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open HEIC files on Windows?
Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC after installing the 'HEIF Image Extensions' and 'HEVC Video Extensions' from the Microsoft Store (the HEVC one may cost a small fee). Converting to JPG avoids that and gives you files that open in every program.
Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like. They're converted one after another, and you can download them all together as a ZIP file.
Is HEIC better than JPG?
Technically yes: it stores the same quality in about half the space and supports transparency and 16-bit color. JPG wins on compatibility, which is why converting is often necessary.
Why does the converted JPG have a bigger file size?
JPG compression is less efficient than HEIC's, so the same picture takes more bytes. Lower the quality to 80 if you want smaller files; the difference is rarely visible.
Are Live Photos converted?
The still image is converted. The short video part of a Live Photo is stored separately by your iPhone and isn't included.
Photos are converted in your browser and are not uploaded. HEIC decoding uses libheif (LGPL-3.0).
