About FileWise

FileWise is an independent website with free tools for everyday image and PDF jobs. It was started by the Crushjs Team after one too many "free" converters that wanted an account, added a watermark, or quietly kept a copy of the file.

What we believe

  • Your files are yours. Every tool runs inside your browser. We never receive your images or documents, so we can't lose, read or sell them.
  • Free means free. No sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit. The site is supported by advertising.
  • Explain the trade-offs. Each tool page explains what the settings do, which format to choose and why, so you can make good decisions about your own files.

How it works

Modern browsers include fast image decoders and encoders (the Canvas API), and can run compiled programs through WebAssembly at close to native speed. FileWise uses these to do on your device what other sites do on their servers. When you open a tool, your browser downloads the page and its code once; from then on, the files you choose are processed locally and saved straight to your device.

Open-source software we use

  • pdf-lib (MIT License) for merging PDFs.
  • heic-to and libheif (LGPL-3.0) for decoding HEIC photos. The library is used unmodified, in a separate file.
  • fflate (MIT License) for creating ZIP downloads.

We're grateful to their authors.
